Hip-hop began as a statement. It still is.

A red halftone collage of the culture's foundations: an MC on the mic, a boombox, a b-boy mid-break. It is built from the parts that came out of 1970s Bronx block parties and went on to reach the whole world.

WE MATTER is not a slogan we invented. It comes from Grandmaster Flash, one of the DJs who built the craft, and the quote stays printed below exactly as it was said.

"Hip-hop's message was very simple and very powerful: 'We matter. We stand for something.'" — Grandmaster Flash

In a 2016 interview with The Guardian, timed with the release of Baz Luhrmann's Netflix series The Get Down, Grandmaster Flash summed up the soul of hip-hop in one sentence. This hoodie was born from that quote — a tribute to a culture that changed the world.

Without hip-hop, there would be no streetwear, no graphic tees, no Urban Lexicon. We wear this with respect.
